Blume Center Computing Information

Accounts and computer management

Matt Bandelt (mbandelt@stanford.edu) and Reagan Chandramohan (reaganc@stanford.edu) administer the four Blume Center shared computers. E-mail Madeleine to get accounts set up. Changes and updates are announced through blume-computing@lists.stanford.edu.  Computers can be accessed locally in Room 107 if high-level graphics rendering is required. 107 used the “lab key,” and keys can be borrowed from Madeleine or Chris.

Computer Access

The computers are accessed through Remote Desktop, and Remote Desktop + VPN if accessed through a computer outside the local network. All accounts are currently Administrator accounts. The computer names and the IP addresses both work for connections. The computers currently accept only one user at a time. If you attempt to log on to a computer and get a window notifying you that the computer is currently in use, please stop the log-on and ask the other student if they are using the computer, or try a different computer.

Data Storage
The computers are not intended to serve as data servers. However, analyses may require large temporary data storage. Folders have been created on the D:/ drive for this purpose. These folders are shared locally so that data can be retrieved for use on a different computer. You are welcome to set up password protection on these drives if you’d like.

Software Updates and General Policies

The computers are not set to update automatically to avoid unplanned restarts during a long analysis run. We’d therefore appreciate it if when you log off the computer if you check if there are any updates ready to install, and install them. Also, please let Chris or Madeleine know if you run into any trouble with the computers, or if queuing becomes a concern.
