CUREE Publications (1988-2016)

Main content start

CUREE (Consortium of Universities for Research in Earthquake Engineering) was established in 1988 as a non-profit organization devoted to earthquake engineering research, education and implementation and promotion of public learning about civil engineering.

Many have received research funding from CUREE over the past 28 years and have contributed to the success of multi-year programs such as CUREE-Kajima Joint Research, the SAC Steel Project, and the CUREE-Caltech Woodframe Project. Public education projects such as the permanent outdoor exhibition at the Golden Gate Bridge explaining engineering have also made a mark. Due to continuing funding shortages for university-based earthquake engineering research, the organization concluded its operations in 2016.

CUREE-Kajima Joint Research Program

Spanning over two decades, the CUREE-Kajima Research Program was a joint venture with the Kajima Corporation of Japan. This inter-university collaborative effort was initiated by CUREe's founding President, Professor Wilfred Iwan and then President of Kajima Corporation, Dr. Takuji Kabori. The studies that resulted from this research program covered a wide range of engineering topics and were the product of extensive collaborative work by researchers in both the U.S. and Japan.

Earthquake Damage and Assessment

Earthquake Damage and Assessment

CUREE conducted an ongoing development of Guidelines for Earthquake Damage Assessment and Repair. The goal was to provide a fair, accurate, and well-documented Guidelines for a general audience as well as engineers involved in evaluations of earthquake damage after an earthquake.

Technical Brief

NIST Seismic Design Technical Brief Series

Produced by CUREE, in partnership with the Applied Technology Council for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), these illustrated Seismic Design Technical Briefs are a synthesis of model building code requirements and leading practitioner-recognized techniques, resulting in clear and concise analysis, design, and construction guidance for use by practicing structural engineers.

This series is also available through NIST at:

Woodframe Project

CUREE-Caltech Woodframe Project

The CUREE-Caltech Woodframe Project consisted of coordinated engineering investigations and implementation activities whose objective was to significantly reduce earthquake losses to woodframe construction. The project was funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) through a grant administered by the California Governors Office of Emergency Services.
